Tuning

We are specifically known for our huge advancements on the A45 AMG platform being the first company to offer a real solution for the 7-speed gearbox allowing for much more power with less initial lag and an overall vast improvement of the way the car performs, not to mention multiple World Records.

Stage 1 Box

  • Torque Limiters Raised to suit ECU Power (550NM)
  • Gearbox expected Torque from ECU Raised to match ECU
  • LC RPM Can be set from to customer preference (Sweet spot seems to be 3300-3800 depending on Specs)
  • Shift Speed Improvements around 10%
  • LC Pressure increased to Help Box off the Line
  • Gearbox Stall Speed adjustment to help pull off lag

Stage 2 Box V1.2

  • Torque Limiters Raised to Suit ECU Power (650nm)
  • Gearbox expected torque from ECU raised to match ECU
  • LC RPM can be set from 2500 to 5000 (Sweet spot seems to be 3300-3800 depending on Specs)
  • LC Pressure Increased to Help box off the Line
  • Manual Mode can be Set up to 7500RPM (ECU Limit must be high enough)
  • PFL Auto is 7000rpm, Manual can be up to 7500rpm
  • FL Auto is 6800rpm, Manual can be up to 7200rpm
  • Sport/Comfort Mode 6400 in 1st two gear, 7000 onwards in the rest for PFL
  • Increase in main Pressure possible for Clutch
  • Shift Speed Improvements around 15-20%
  • Gearbox Stall Speed adjustment to help pull off lag

W176 Common Issues

This is where you can find some of the common issues that this platform can suffer with.
They are very solid cars with no major mechanical Engine Faults at all, however, as with all cars there are some things you should be aware of;

1. Rear Differential

This is a weak spot on these cars as they are becoming more and more common to fail due to a lack of Scheduled Service intervals and no Replaceable Internal Filter like a Haldex System would have on a VAG Car.

We recommend Servicing the Rear Differential Every 10,000 Miles or Yearly Depending on Mileage and type of use the car gets, ie. Daily Driver and less arduous driving, or, a car that only gets used on weekends but driven hard.

2. TURBOCHARGER

 The Stock Turbochargers do suffer from Excessive Wastegate Movement causing a lack of Boost Pressure causing a loss of power, This is a common issue that can be found on Pre-facelift cars more commonly but as the Facelift cars are now getting close to being 10 years old it is not surprising to see this throughout the model range.

This can be rectified by having the turbo removed and refurbished which we can offer through our Turbo Builder (The Little Turbo Company), or we can also Upgrade your turbo which is a much more popular option with a Mild Hybrid (The EST x Littco L500) Turbocharger or the Bigger Hybrid (The EST x Littco L540) Turbocharger.

However, the most popular upgrade we have seen in recent months (as of June 2024) is the New Mamba Full Frame Option which is a very exciting addition to the offerings for the W176 Platform, offering fantastic power potential (up to 570hp) which is a more cost-effective alternative to a Hybrid Turbo in some cases.

3. Coil Packs and Spark Plugs

This is the most common issue by far, this is a Consumable issue more than a Common Fault but it should be mentioned nonetheless as it will affect every car that comes into us at some point.

Mercedes has revised the design of the A45/CLA45/GLA45 Coil Pack around 6 times from 2013 up to present, this is due to various reasons, water ingress, quick deterioration of the internal components or the Sleeve design around the Coil Pack, as with all Petrol Performance cars it is not unusual to have to replace or upgrade the Ignition Coils/ Coil Packs when Tuning, this is to give the car the best base to make the most power available, we offer Replacement Genuine Parts in Stock as there is currently no Upgraded Version that we have found that is worth the extra spend.

We also replace the Stock Spark Plugs with NGK Iridium Plugs as they are a Step Colder which means when Cylinder Temps increase the Spark is not affected like a stock Spark Plug would be.

4. Charge Cooler Pump (For the 2ND Circuit)

The W176 has 2 separate circuits for Coolant, the Main Circuit is to circulate water through the Engine to aid in keeping the Internal Temps of the Engine Stable (Around 90-120C).

The 2nd Circuit is the Charge System which aids in keeping the Intakes Low which is important for Performance, This is where the problem lies, the Design of the Charge Pump that Pushes water throughout this circuit can fail due to a Plastic Propeller Wheel glued onto a Metal Shaft which spins, after hundreds, if not thousands of Heat cycles the Glue holding the Propeller wheel to the shaft, fails, this means the motor in the pump is still moving and the shaft is still spinning but the wheel is not.

Mercedes Revised this part with a Push-fit Propeller wheel which means there is no chance of this problem recurring, this is a fault that you may not even be aware of when driving your car as the On Board Coolant temp does not show the 2nd Circuit, only the Main Engine Coolant temp which are not linked.

5. Thermostat and Housing

Another thing to be aware of around 40,000-60,000 Miles is the Thermostat Failing, this is caused by the Housing becoming brittle over time and then cracking.

You will notice the EML Light shows on the Dash when this happens, possible Coolant leaks under the car, Lower than usual Coolant Temps displayed on the dash and these can also drop rapidly under acceleration, another thing to look out for is a sudden drop in MPG per Tank of Fuel.

Stage 1 Gearbox Software raises the Internal Torque Limit and changes the Launch Control Revs to 3000RPM as we have found this is the most effective launch at those RPMs, it will also change the Launch Control Clamping Pressure to minimize any clutch slip, including all of the above Stage 1 Gearbox Notes!

Workshop Install of Parts

Stage 2 Gearbox Software again, raises the Internal torque limit up to 650nm allowing a Stage 2 Remap to gain an extra 20-30ft-lbs on a normal Stage 2 car without the gearbox tune. It Lowers the Launch Control RPMs to 3000 RPM, Raises Clamping Pressure for Launch Control to minimize clutch Slip, Raises RPMs in auto to 6900/7000, Manual Mode is raised to 7200, and Sport to 7400. (The higher RPM Changes make the most difference in a Pre-Facelift due to different Gear Ratios) The shifts are less jerky and allow for smooth transitions with less lag time.
